Analyzing Household Energy Consumption Behavior

Abstract
The government of India is making concentrated efforts towards
a greener India. From installing solar panels to launching e-vehicles, India
has taken a step towards healthier and greener surroundings. But the rising
pollution in the capital, Delhi, tells another story. In this study, patterns
of household energy consumption and attitudes toward energy-saving practices
were investigated. A survey of 31 participants collected data on household
size, appliance usage, peak electricity hours, awareness of energy-saving
habits, and willingness to adopt such practices.

1. Introduction
People’s reckless consumption of energy has become a burden on the Earth. At the household level, energy consumption is the largest contributor to electricity demand, which inadvertently has a negative effect on the environment. Understanding household energy consumption is essential for devising ways to effectively save energy. This study aims to analyze household electricity consumption behavior among a sample of 31 participants and identify patterns that can help to strategize energy consumption methods.
2. Methods
Participants: Thirty-one people participated in the survey.
Survey Instruments:
The survey consisted of 13 questions consisting of:
· Household size
· Daily appliance usage
· Peak electricity usage hours
· Use of energy-saving appliances
· Frequency of unplugging devices
·Awareness of energy-saving habits
· Current efforts to limit electricity use
· Additional information
(Question formats included single-choice, multiple-choice, likely scale, and open-ended responses.)
3. Data Collection and Analysis
Responses were collected online and analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, and likely scales.
4. Results
i) Household Size:
61.3% participants lived in 3-4 member households, 19.4% lived in 1–2 member households while 19.4% in 5 or more member households.

ii) Appliance Usage:
The appliances used are:
· Refrigerator: 100%
· Mobile phone chargers: 96.8%
· Computer/Laptop: 83.3%
· Television: 77.4%
· Fans: 67.7%
· Air Conditioner: 61.3%
· Water Heaters: 41.9%
Less commonly used appliances included coffee machines (3.2%), freezers, ovens, and other specialized appliances (3.2%).
iii) Peak Electricity Hours:
Evenings (5 PM – 10 PM) are the
peak electricity usage hours (90.3%), followed by morning (48.4%), afternoon
(41.9%), and night (35.5%).
iv) Energy-Saving Practices:
· Use of energy-saving appliances: 51.6% of participants reported using them, 25.8% were unsure, and 22.6% did not use them.
· Frequency of unplugging devices: 29% always unplugged, 16.1% often unplugged, 32.3% sometimes unplugged, 12.9% rarely unplugged, and 9.7% never unplugged.
· Aware of energy-saving habits: 100% of participants were aware.
v) Willingness to Adopt Energy-Saving Habits:
· Switching to LED bulbs:
71% are very willing
· Unplugging devices: 61.3% are very willing
· Using fans instead of AC: 41.9% are very willing
· Turning off lights when not needed: 90.3% are very
willing
· Using energy-efficient appliances: 54.8% are very
willing
vi) Current Efforts to Limit Electricity Use:
67.7% of participants regularly attempted to limit electricity use to reduce bills, while 22.6% did so occasionally, and 9.7% did not try.
vii) Additional Information:
Participants mentioned practical limitations such as health issues and climatic conditions (e.g., AC use due to heat, ineffective fans in humid conditions). Some suggested the adoption of energy-saving appliances, LED bulb,s and solar panels as viable ways to reduce household energy consumption.
5. Conclusion
This study shows that awareness of energy-saving habits is high, and willingness to adopt such measures is mostly strong. However, the actual implementations of such measures are happening on a very small scale. Government programs and local community initiatives can help bridge this gap. Future research with larger, more diverse samples could provide deeper insights into household energy behavior and come up with more efficient conservation methods.
